Biographical Summary:
Denzil Rupert Cowen, who had previously been known as Denzil Rupert Cohen, enlisted at Brisbane on 10 January 1916, not long after his family had relocated from Mosman to Redcliffe, a seaside resort on the north-eastern outskirts of Brisbane. He gave his age as 19 years, 1 month when in fact he was 16 years and 4 months.
He arrived in Egypt in June 1916 as a reinforcement for the 5th Australian Light Horse Regiment but, a month after his arrival, he was transferred to the Australian Provost Corps in which his brother, Errol Henry Cowen, was serving.
He served with the Provost Corps until he transferred to the 5th Australian Light Horse Regiment in April 1917. He remained with that unit until his return and discharge in September 1919. [JSB]
