The citation in the London Gazette published on 23 April 1918 states:
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as forward observation officer. The liaison officer having been killed, the only information received came through him, and enabled at least two counter-attacks to be utterly routed by artillery concentration. During the whole of the operation he was under very heavy fire."
