Biographical Summary:
A professional soldier who graduated from Royal Military College, Duntroon before enlisting in the AIF. He was wounded in action at Pozieres during an attack on the German front line by the 13th Battalion which started at 10.30 pm on 14 August 1916. He was taken prisoner of war the next day. Held in Germany until transferred as an intenee to Switzerland on 27 November 1917 where he met his future wife, Dora Betschen. Released and repatriated to England on 9 December 1918.
His mother was living at Manly at the time of his embarkation. She had a long association with the Neutral Bay/Cremorne area through her family home, Redlands, Military Road, Neutral Bay, owned by the Phillips family up until the late 1890s. During and after the war years she stayed at a number of Sydney addresses including two in Cremorne. Her brother, Oswald John Phillips, lived at 3 Cyprian Street, Mosman which may be the reason Arthur Gerard Fox's name appears on the Mosman War Memorial.
