Biographical Summary:
A caretaker who enlisted in the AIF on 17 December 1915. He had served in the Royal Navy from 1889 until 1903 and was serving on HMS Katoomba which was stationed in Australia at the end of his service. He embarked for Egypt on 8 March 1916.
He was allotted to the 55th Battalion on 20 April. The battalion landed at Marseilles, France on 29 June and immediately moved to northern France. On 26 September he was evacuated to hospital with rheumatism. Following treatment in France he was diagnosed with sciatica and evacuated to England on 15 November. It was decided that he should return to Australia.
He embarked on 4 May and arrived on 6 July then was discharged from the AIF on 11 August 1917. [JSB]
