Biographical Summary:
Arthur Ernest Keen (born Arthur Conrad Kaiser and later known as Arthur Conrad Keen) enlisted on 14 September 1914 at the age, at most, of 15 years.
His unit, 13th Battalion, landed at Anzac Cove on the night of 25/26 April 1915. He was wounded (right finger) on 2 May 1915 and evacuated to Egypt. He returned to Gallipoli in early August and was wounded (left finger) for a second time on 23 August 1915. He again returned to Gallipoli on 13 November 1915 where he remained until the 13th Battalion evacuated on the night of 19/20 December 1915.
In March 1916 he transferred to Artillery and served as a Gunner with the 10th Field Artillery Brigade. He was wounded for the third time on 5 October 1917 with a severe gunshot wound to his right leg. He was hospitalised in England until 29 November 1917 and, after being transferred to various holding and training units, he returned to France on 7 March 1918. On 1 September 1918 he was transferred to England prior to returning to Australia on 27 November. He was discharged on 26 January 1919 not yet 20 years of age.
Arthur Ernest Keen died at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick on 28 May 1937 at the age of 37. [JSB]
