Biographical Summary:
A farmer who enlisted in the AIF on 7 March 1915. He embarked for Egypt with the 26th Battalion on 29 June and arrived on 5 August 1915.
He landed at Gallipoli with the 26th on 12 September. He was evacuated from the front line with jaundice on 4 December and then to Egypt on 10 December.
He was sent to a holding unit on 14 March 1916 and on 18 May 1916 arrived at Marseille, France and moved to a holding unit in northern France. He rejoined the 26th Battalion on 7 July when it was in the front line at Messines, Belgium. He was wounded (foot and hand) in action on 5 August at Pozieres Heights and evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence.
He rejoined the 26th Battalion then resting at Contalmaison, France on 5 February 1917. He was twice recommended for the award of Mentioned in Despatches. The first for gallantry and devotion to duty on 4 October 1917 at Broodseinde Ridge and the second in February 1918 for an undocumented reason. The awards were not made.
He embarked for Australia on 9 March 1919 and arrived on 23 April then was discharged from the AIF on 1 July 1919. [JSB]
