Biographical Summary:
Twin bother of Geoffrey Oatley with whom he enlisted in the AIF on the same day. Both served in the 4th Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade.
Both were wounded in action on 1 October 1917 when their battery was firing registration rounds in preparation for the Battle of Broodseinde Ridge which began on 4 October 1917.
He suffered gun shot wounds to his face and was sent for treatment in France. He returned to his unit on 7 November 1917, two days after his brother had been gassed and evacuated for treatment. [JSB]
