Mosman Library is pleased to announce another Doing Our Bit: Mosman 1914 -18 event.
Local Studies Librarian, Donna Braye says “During wartime songs served to inspire patriotism, maintain morale and allowed soldiers to entertain and to express themselves when the spoken word was inadequate” and “ as well as mock the enemy!”
“We are excited to present Cultural historian, Robert Holden and his observations on the music and songs that inspired Australian troops during the First World War.”
“A Mitchell Library History Fellowship enabled him to research manuscripts, diaries, letters, and rare books to discover the importance of songs on the battlefront.”
Holden says “during my research I would be so moved that I would have to leave the Mitchell Library to distance myself from the emotions”
“This research resulted in the book And The Band Played On in which Holden brings together a wonderful and moving picture of impromptu entertainments, sing-a-longs, storytelling and recitations all part of a homespun repertoire that accompanied our Anzacs.
“Holden has written over 30 books dealing with various aspects of Australian cultural history including children’s literature, illustration and design”
“And the Band Played On is to form the curatorial basis of an Anzac Centenary Exhibition at the National Library of Australia planned for 2016”
“Holden is an engaging speaker and the evening promises to be an insightful, moving and enlightening one”
“Those attending are inviting to bring along a personal piece of ANZAC memorabilia to share.”
