He commenced training in England as a reinforcement for the 53rd Battalion but due to haemorrhoids and neuritis in his right leg it was decided that he should return to Australia.
He embarked on 11 April 1918 and arrived on 1 June then was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 9 August 1918. [JSB]
