Biographical Summary:
A motor mechanic who enlisted in the AIF on 6 September 1915. He embarked for Egypt with the 20th Army Service Corps (AASC) Company, 2nd Divisional Train on 27 November 1915.
He was transferred to the 14th AASC Company, 4th Divisional Train on 9 March 1916. His unit arrived at Marseille, France in early June and moved to Abbeville in northern France. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1917. The recommendation for the award was made at the same time for a number of 4th Division soldiers involved in supplying the front line at the Battle of Messines, Belgium in June 1917. It reads as follows:
“From 5th to 12th June 1917 near Messines these NCO’s and men were employed with the Divl (sic) Pack Transport Troop which was used nightly in taking up supplies, water and ammunition to the various Battn. (sic) Headquarters. The various convoys came nightly under heavy shell and machine gun fire & their work was carried out in the dark and under trying conditions, in some cases the supplies were taken up to within a few hundred yards from the front line.
“The NCOs and men have been selected in order of merit out of 177 NCOs and men employed as having set an example of coolness under fire & determination in carrying out their duties.”
He embarked for Australia on 2 June 1919 and arrived on 20 July then was discharged from the AIF on 19 September 1919. [JSB]
