Biographical Summary:
A merchant who enlisted in the AIF on 24 September 1914. He embarked for Egypt with the 2nd Australian Light Horse Field Ambulance on 15 December 1914 and arrived on 1 February 1915. His brother David Gifford Croll, who was a doctor from Brisbane, was second in command of the unit.
He was Transport Sergeant with the unit until he transferred to the 7th Australian Light Horse (ALH)Regiment on 3 January 1917. He was wounded (left leg) in action on 29 July 1917. After treatment and convalescence, he returned to the 7th ALH on 18 September 1917.
He was sent to Officer Cadet School in March 1918 and was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the 7th ALH on 15 June 1918. In August he was hospitalised in Jerusalem suffering from malaria after which he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Commander of the 5th Australian Light Horse Brigade in September 1918.
He embarked for Australia on 26 December 1918 and arrived on 28 January 1919 and then was discharged from the AIF on 12 April 1919. [JSB]
