John Wilfred Buckeridge

Biographical Summary:

A student who enlisted in the AIF on 11 August 1915, coincidently days after his brother Charles Stanley Buckeridge had been killed in action at Gallipoli. He embarked for Egypt on 2 November 1915 as a reinforcement for the 17th Battalion. In Egypt he was allocated to the 55th Battalion which moved to France in late June 1916.

He was awarded the Military Medal in 1917. The recommendation for the award was as follows:

“At the attack on Doignes on 2nd April 1917, this signaler in conjunction with Signaller Wolrige (also from Mosman), established communication from the Battalion Hqrs (sic) to the attacking companies at Doignes, and maintained same throughout the fight under heavy artillery barrage and machine gun fire. His energies were unceasing in keeping communication established under most trying circumstances.

This signaller has rendered very good service since the Battalion has been on the Somme and has always set a good example to his comrades by his gallantry.”

He embarked for Australia on 12 April 1919 and arrived on 25 May 1919. He was discharged from the AIF on 18 July 1919. [JSB]
