Biographical Summary:
Wounded in action twice. The first time was on 3 May 1917, the first day of the Second Battle of Bullecourt, when the 18th Battalion took part in the initial attack on the German line. He received bullet wounds to his left arm and right leg. After evacuation and convalescence in England, he returned to the front line in January 1918.
He received a severe gunshot wound to his left leg on 9 April 1918 during heavy shelling as his battalion was withdrawing from overnight shelter in the village of Gentelles near Villers-Bretonneux. He again was sent to England to recover and returned to his unit in October 1918. [JSB]
