Severely wounded in action on 22 October 1917. The entry in the 30th Battalion's War Diary for that day observes:
Fairly heavy shelling all day … heavy casualties to our NCOs during the day.
He married Marjorie Florence Grave who had served in England and France with the Australian Army Nursing Service and whom he had met during his convalescence in Australia. [JSB]
