Biographical Summary:
Enlisted in the AIF 2 weeks after his 17th birthday by overstating his age by five years. He went on to serve with the 35th Battalion in France, firstly at Hamel and during the Allied offensive up to the Armistice.
He enlisted in the Second AIF in December 1939, understating his age by seven years. While serving with the 2/3rd Battalion in Greece, he was wounded in action and captured on 2 June 1941. He was held as a prisoner of war in Germany until released for repatriation in October 1943. He returned to Australia in December 1943 via Barcelona and Egypt. [JSB]
