Biographical Summary:

Served at Gallipoli.

He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions during the Battle of Broodseinde Ridge in October 1917:

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in guiding men into position under heavy shell fire. Although wounded himself he single-handed attacked four of the enemy, killing them with his revolver, when he was wounded a second time and put out of action." [London Gazette Supplement, 1 March 1918, p2758]

The recommendation for the award of the DCM by his Divisional Comander gives more details and reads as follows:

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations at BROODSEINDE RIDGE east of YPRES on October 3rd to 6th, 1917, L/Cpl. SYMINGTON showed great courage and skill in guiding men into position under heavy shell fire, and although wounded himself during the advance he singlehanded tackled four Germans killing them all with his revolver. He was wounded a second time and put out of action.  His courage was a fine example to his comrades."  [JSB]
