Biographical Summary:
Enlisted in the AIF on May 1915. He joined the 20th Battalion at Gallipoli in August 1915. He was twice evacuated due to dysentery and both times returned to his unit at Gallipoli.
The 20th Battalion sailed from Egypt in March 1916 to France to join the British forces on the Western Front. He continued to serve with the 20th Battalion until the end of the war.
He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. The recommendation for this award was as follows:
"This N.C.O. is the Battalion Orderly Room Sergeant. His work has always been of the hightest standard of efficiency.
During the recent operations, which necessitated a considerable amount of work in the battalion Orderly Room, he was untiring in his efforts and worked till a late hour each night, so as to keep all records of casualties, etc. well up to date, thus assisting in no small degree, the Battalion Headquarters Staff.
He has at all times shown an untiring devotion to duty."
