William Holley

Biographical Summary:
Enlisted in the AIF on 18 August 1914, two weeks after the declaration of war. He had previously served in the Permanent Military Forces in the artillery and infantry.
He served as a driver with the 1st Division Signal Company. He was sent to Gallipoli and was supposed to land on 25 April 1915. However,
"… all Drivers were ordered to stay aboard (SS Minnewaska) to attend the horses. We remained there awaiting orders for 3 weeks, when we left for Egypt …" (National Archives of Australia, Personal File).
In Egypt he became ill and was sent back to Australia. He arrived in October 1915 and was discharged from the AIF in January 1916. [JSB]
