Biographical Summary:
Enlisted in the AIF in November 1915 by understating his age by six years. His previous military service had been with the British Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War.
He left Australia in September 1916 and arrived in England in November 1916. He remained at the 1st Australian Training Battalion until he joined the 2nd Battalion in January 1918.
He was slightly wounded in his neck during a night time operation by the battalion on 24 June 1918 near Strazeele, France. He did not return to the front as his medical fitness level was downgraded due to his age and "debility". He returned to the 1st Australian Training Battalion until his embarkation in December 1918 to return to Australia.
