Biographical Summary:
Douglass Phillips Herbert, B.Sc., B.E., A.M.I.E.Aust., Diploma in Military Science : Engineer-Lieutenant-Commander, R.A.N. Joining H.M.A.S. "Encounter" as engineer-sub-lieutenant in 1912, served on H.M.S. "Hibernia" in Mediterranean and on "Sydney" during speed trials and, after training on submarines in British waters, returned to Australia as second-lieutenant in May, 1914. On the outbreak of War went with the submarines to New Guinea and the Pacific and in 1915 was sent to H.M.A.S. "Australia" in North Sea. Returning to Australia in 1917, was appointed to the destroyer "Yarra" and, after cruising for some time in Pacific, proceeded to the Mediterranean, after the Armistice going to the Black Sea, then to England for refit and finally to Australia. Promoted Acting Engineer-Lieutenant-Commander, 1st April, 1919, and transferred to H.M.A.S. "Platypus" . Engineer-Commander, 1924; Squadron Engineer Officer, 1932. Early education at Armidale Superior Public and East Maitland High Schools.
