Biographical Summary:
Enlisted in the AIF in July 1916. His departure from Australia was delayed to ensure that he was 19 years old when he arrived in England. After an extended period of training, which included qualifying as a signaller, he joined the 17th Battalion in France in March 1918. He was wounded in action on 14 May 1918 and evacuated to England with a gunshot wound to his chest. At the time, his battalion was in the front line near Sailly-le-Sec, Somme. He remained in England until he boarded ship on on 8 September 1919 to return to Australia. He arrived in Melbourne on 27 October 1919 and was discharged from the AIF there on 4 December 1919. [JSB]
