Biographical Summary:
A clerk who enlisted in the AIF on 18 April 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 16 June 1915.
He landed at Gallipoli as a reinforcement for the 1st Battalion on 6 August and was wounded in action (leg) three days later at the Battle of Lone Pine, He was evacuated to Mudros, Greece for medical treatment and convalescence, then rejoined his battalion at Gallipoli on 25 October.
He returned to Egypt on 28 December. On 14 February 1916, he was transferred to the newly formed 53rd Battalion, which after training in Egypt landed at Marseilles, France on 28 June 1916 and immediately moved to Thiennes in northern France.
He went missing in action on 19 July 1916 at the disastrous Battle of Fromelles. His battalion had gone into action with 851 men out of whom 625 (76%) were killed, wounded or missing including its commanding officer killed in action. [JSB]
