Biographical Summary:
Went to Mosman Public School and Sydney Grammar School. Served in the cadets.
Wounded (shrapnel, hip) Gallipoli, 25 June 1915. Via Hosptial Ship Gascon to 1st Australian General Hospital, Heliopolis.
Commissioned August 1916. Awarded Military Cross 1918.
Action for which commended
South West of METEREN on the morning of June 24th., 1918, during an attack on the enemy's trenches, this Officer led his platoon with great dash and judgment and quickly capture his objective, after disposing of the enemy intervening,
Prior to the attack this Officer made excellent reconnaissances of the enemy's positions and gained valuable information in spite of their efforts to drive him off.
Killed in action, in the early morning of 18 September 1918, at the beginning of an attack west of Hargicourt..
He enlisted in the 2nd Infantry Battalion in August, 1914, and was at the landing at Gallipoli. He was wounded at the end of June, 1915; but on recovering he returned to the peninsula, and subsequently was transferred to France. After the taking of Pozieres in 1916 he was granted a commission, and had been almost continuously in the fighting line. The deceased officer was an old Sydney Grammar School boy, and was in his 23rd year. The Sydney Morning Herald, Saturday 5 October 1918
His father Percy Herbert, mother Annie Marcella and sister Madge lived at "Darbalara" later renamed "Ericmont" 35 Avenue Road, Mosman. He had one brother, the Rev. H. J. Hillman, a Presbyterian minister.
