Enlisted with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force on 16 August 1914.  He was invalided from Rabaul suffering from malaria and returned to Australia on 29 November 1914.  He was discharged from the ANMEF on 9 March 1915. 

He enlisted in the AIF on 9 April 1915 and embarked for overseas service five days later.  He joined the 3rd Battalion at Gallipoli on 14 June.  At the Battle of Lone Pine on 6 August 1915, he was concussed and buried in a collapsed trench, and remained uncounscious for 10 hours after his extrication.

He was evacuated to Lemnos, Greece and then to England for treatment.  The effects of concussion left him partially paralysed for months afterwards.  He remained in England until July 1917 when he was sent back to Australia due to suffering from fits.  He arrived in September and was eventually discharged medically unfit on 24 March 1918.

He died on 22 October 1928. 

He is the step brother of Harold Ernest Hancox.  [JSB]
