A Customs officer who enlisted in the AIF on 10 October 1916. He embarked for England on 31 October and arrived on 9 January 1917.

He joined the 15th Field Company Engineers (FCE) on 11 April 1917 when the unit was undertaking various tasks in the Bapaume area. He was awarded the Military Medal. The recommendation for this award was as follows:

"At Polygon Wood, this sapper, during operations 25/26/27 Septr. (sic) accompanied his officer Lieut. Ewart in the staking and taping of the track marked out from our front line to the objective we were to gain. He personally carried stakes to and from the head of the track. Subsequently he rendered great assistance in consolidation of the line, setting a very fine example to his comrades by his actual work and supervision of the infantry at work on the consolidation. He has since carried out further able and cool work in the face of much machine gun fire in making another track to the front line in daylight on the 27th inst. (sic)."

He commenced officer cadet training in England in February 1918 and was appointed Second Lieutenant on 16 June 1918. He rejoined the 15th FCE on 10 July then was transferred to the 6th FCE on 3 August.

He embarked for Australia on 20 June 1919 and arrived on 10 August then his appointment was terminated on 27 November 1919. [JSB]
