The recommendation for his award of the Military Cross gives further insight into his service:
This officer has been employed on the Hill 70 (near Lens, France) front for over 2 years. He has commanded a section since 24.7.16. During the past 7 months his section has completed over two miles of Infantry Subway in very exposed positions on the Hill 70 front. The success of this work is largely due to the example of gallantry and devotion to duty always shown by Capt. Morris.
