Served with Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force between August 1914 and March 1915.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force later in March 1915 and while with the 18th Battalion in Egypt in August 1915 he became ill with appendicitis. He returned to Australia due to complications from an operation to remove his appendix. He was discharged from the AIF in July 1916 but coninued to serve in the Army.
He re-enlisted in the AIF in February 1917 and after training in England joined the 13th Battalion in France in April 1918. He was wounded on 18 September 1918 while in action at Peronne. He returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged in July 1919. [JSB]
