In April 1938 Donald Ayers writes to Base Records -
I have been away in New Zealand most of the time since the end of the war and have never attempted to collect my medals.
It has taken me nearly 20 years to ask for them and it is not without a twinge of conscience that I now ask you to please expedite the delivery of these medals to me.
My reason for this sudden haste being that I have just returned from N.Z. and a number of my pals are coming over for the big combined parade on this coming Anzac Day, and it will be my first appearance on such an occasion if you can comply with such a belated request.
Accompanying the request is a Statutory Declaration where he lists his service:
Sailed "Ceramic" 17th. Reinf. 1st. Batt. Early 1916. Act. Sergeant.
Transferred to 53rd. Batt. Tel-el-kebir.
Transf. to 14th. Training Batt. Larkhill
Transf. to 3rd. Div. Trench Mortars as Artificer.
Transf. to 8th. Brigade Artillery while in France as Artificer and served as artificer in the 31st & 29th. Batteries.
Wounded 2nd Battle Passchendale. Hospital Rouen.
Gassed at Wassigney about ten days before the Armistice
Hosp. 14th Canadian General Taplow Bucks.
Harefield, Weymouth Conv. Camp.
Returned Australia per "Medic" 1919.
Outpatient Randwick Military Hospital short period.
Discharged 1919.
