Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and Mentioned in Despatches for service at Gallipoli with the 20th Battalion, AIF. He was evacuated to Australia in early 1916 as a result of enteric fever.
He rejoined the 20th Battalion in France in December 1916 and was killed in action during the German spring offensive near Hangard on 6 April 1918. His body was never recovered. [JSB]
