A storekeeper who had served in the South African War and who enlisted in the AIF on 13 October 1915 then was appointed a Second Lieutenant on 17 February 1916. He embarked for England on 16 June and arrived on 25 August 1917.
He joined the 18th Battalion then in a rest area in Belgium on 11 December 1917. He was evacuated to hospital in France on 24 March with a sprained ankle and, after treatment and convalescence, returned to his unit then in a rear area at Frechencourt, France on 6 May.
He was evacuated from the front line near Ville-sur-Ancre, France to hospital on 22 May with a fever. After initial treatment in France, he was evacuated to England. He was transferred to a convalescent home on 2 August 1918. He was diagnosed with neurasthenia and it was decided that he should return to Australia.
He embarked on 15 September 1918 and arrived on 4 November then his appointment in the AIF was terminated on 27 June 1919. [JSB]
