A bricklayer's labourer who enlisted in the AIF on 8 September 1915, stating that his age was 42 years. He embarked for Egypt on 20 December 1915.
On 4 March 1916, he joined the 13th Battalion which arrived at Marseilles, France on 7 June and moved immediately to northern France. He was evacuated to hospital in France on 6 September with an injured right hand.
In November a medical board determined that he was fit for base duties only due to his "age and debility". He was evacuated to England on 11 November for further treatment. His records show that his true age was 61 years. It was decided that he should return to Australia.
He embarked on 13 February 1917 and arrived on 12 April then was discharged from the AIF on 18 May 1917. [JSB]
