A dentist who enlisted in the AIF on 9 July 1915. Following officer training, he was appointed a Second Lieutenant on 1 December 1915. He embarked for England on 3 June and arrived on 3 August 1916.
He joined the 2nd Battalion then in a rest area at Mametz, France on 21 February 1917. He was wounded (hip, legs) in action on 4 October when the battalion was in the front line preparing to attack Broodseinde Ridge, Belgium. He was evacuated to the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance but died the same day.
His mother living with his brother, Henry Hammon Wilkes of Upper Spit Road (see death notice), at the time of his death. [JSB]
