A clerk who enlisted in the AIF on 6 June 1916. He embarked for England on 26 October and arrived on 28 December 1916.
He joined the 19th Battalion then resting at Fricourt east of Albert, France on 5 April 1917. He was awarded the Military Cross. The recommendation for the award was as follows:
"This NCO was with his platoon during the attack east of Zonnebeke (Belgium) on 9th October (1917). After his officer and platoon sergeant had become casualties he immediately took charge of the platoon showing great confidence and ability and leadership. He continually patrolled portion of the lines occupied by his platoon under extremely heavy shell fire and the most trying circumstances. His splendid courage and quick grasp of the situation was responsible for holding together of his men and inspired them with the utmost confidence."
On 2 March 1918 he joined the permanent staff of the Overseas Training Brigade at Longbridge Deverill, England. He returned to France and joined the 20th Battalion at Vignacourt north-west of Amiens on 10 October 1918. The Battalion had moved out of the front line for the last time five days before.
He had married Nora Millicent Phillips in February 1917. They embarked for Australia on 18 December 1919 and arrived on 7 February then he was discharged from the AIF on 29 March 1920. [JSB]
