A produce merchant who enlisted in the AIF on 30 August 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 11 December 1915.
He joined the 1st Battalion on 14 February 1916. The Battalion arrived at Marseille, France on 28 March 1916 and immediately moved to northern France. He was wounded (left side) in action on 5 November 1916 north of Gueudecourt, France in the initial stage of the Battle of Flers. He was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence.
In January 1917 he was reclassified as no longer fit for front line service. He was posted to AIF Headquarters in London and served with the Australian Army Pay Corps. It was determined by a Medical Board in March 1918 that he should return to Australia "for (a) change, gunshot wound left chest" as he had not fully recovered.
He embarked on 21 April 1918 and arrived on 7 June then was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 12 July 1918. [JSB]
