A pastrycook who enlisted in the AIF on 29 November 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 8 March 1916.
He was allotted to the 56th Battalion on 20 April 1916. The Battalion arrived at Marseille, France on 29 June 1916 and immediately moved to northern France. He was evacuated to hospital on 15 February 1917 after being kicked (by a horse?). After initial treatment in France, he was evacuated to England for further treatment and convalescence.
He rejoined his unit on 25 April 1917 when it was resting at Becourt east of Albert, France. He was again evacuated on 17 May with pneumonia. Following his release from hospital in England in late July 1917 his fitness level was downgraded and it was not until June 1918 that he was fit enough to return to his unit. He rejoined the 56th near Bray, France on 7 July 1918.
He embarked for Australia on 2 June 1919 and arrived on 19 July then was discharged from the AIF on 18 September 1919. [JSB]
