A bookkeeper who joined the AIF on 29 August 1914. He embarked with the 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment on 20 October 1914 and arrived in Egypt
He landed at Gallipoli on 12 May 1915 and was wounded (neck) in action on 28 May. He was evacuated to Egypt for treatment and convalescence. He returned to his unit at Gallipoli on 10 August and was wounded (right shoulder) on 19 August. This time he was evacuated to Mudros, Greece and then to England for treatment and convalescence.
He was discharged from the AIF in England on 27 October 1915 on his appointment as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery, British Army, initially serving in the Royal Horse Artillery in England. He was awarded the Military Cross. The citation was as follows:
"For conspicuous gallantry in action. He led a party to within a hundred yards of the enemy's lines and brought back an enemy field gun. He displayed great courage and determination throughout."
He was wounded in action a third time and went on to serve with the Air Ministry in England.
He served in the Second AIF from 1940 to 1945 and commanded the Torres Strait and Merauke (West Papua) Forces and the 1st Beach Group. [JSB]
