A proof reader who enlisted in the AIF on 24 January 1917. He embarked for Egypt on 9 May 1917 and arrived on 20 June 1917.

He joined the 1st Light Horse Regiment (ALH) at Ghabi, Palestine on 31 July. He developed synovitis of the knee and was evacuated to hospital in Egypt on 11 September. He was discharged from hospital and put on light duties at the 1st Australian Mounted Division Depot Store until he was classified fit on 12 May 1918 to return to the front line.

He rejoined the 1st ALH on 13 June. He was evacuated to hospital with a fever on 2 October 1918 when the 1st ALH was near Amman, Jordan, eventually being sent to Egypt for treatment and convalescence. He returned to his unit in February 1919.
