Whilst in our position of readiness, the (18th)Battalion bivouac was heavily shelled for about two hours, during which time he attended to the wounded in the open and saw to their evacuation, with utter disregard for personal safety.

"Again in the attack on the village of Cerisy on 8th August 1918 he followed closely behind the attacking troops and established his R.A.P.(Regimental Aid Post), close behind the Support Company whilst the fight was in progress. He was under heavy artillery and machine gun fire for several hours with scant protection and attended to the wounded with great coolness. His work thoughout was of the highest order."
