A vulcaniser who enlisted in the AIF on 1 July 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 8 October.
He was allotted to the 2nd Battalion on 21 January 1916. The battalion arrived at Marseilles, France on 28 March and immediately moved to northern France. On 3 October he was transferred to the 1st Light Trench Mortar Battery.
He was wounded (shell shock) in action in Belgium on 21 September when a shell exploded near him and he was knocked unconscious and buried for 30 minutes. The unit's War Diary reported that as well as him suffering shell shock there were also two killed and three (physically) wounded. However, it was not until 2 October that he was evacuated to hospital in France, then on 6 November to England for treatment and convalescence. It was decided that he should return to Australia.
He embarked on 10 March and arrived on 12 May then was discharged from the AIF on 10 August 1918. [JSB]
