An engineer's labourer who enlisted in the AIF on 22 February 1915. He embarked for Egypt with the 27th Battalion on 31 May 1915.
He landed at Gallipoli on 10 September and returned to Egypt with the battalion on 10 January 1916.
The 27th landed at Marseilles, France on 21 March and immediately moved to northern France. He was wounded (face) in action on 4 August 1916 during an attack on the German lines at Pozieres. In the action, the 27th lost 42 killed, 296 wounded and 69 missing. He was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence.
He rejoined the 27th on 18 December 1916 when it was out of the front line and at Saint-Vaast-en-Chaussee north-east of Amiens, France. In January 1917 he was attached to the Australian Corps Engineers Workshops in France where he was a fitter and turner and remained there until January 1919.
He embarked for Australia on 28 March and arrived on 26 May then was discharged from the AIF on 27 July 1919.
He was the brother-in-law of Clarence Victor Batten who was married to his sister. [JSB]
