Served at Gallipoli with the 13th Battalion, AIF.

Took a commission with the RFC in March 1917. Flew with 60 Squadron RFC and 29 Squadron RAF from 9 October 1918.

Scored one of the last aerial victories of the First World War  -- a Fokker DVII crashed 15:45, 10 November 1918, SE Moorleghem. Baalman was flying SE5a F899.

Was living in Mosman in 1922.
