HOOKER, John Edward Halford (1898-1982) was an Australian cricketer who fought in Palestine in World War I and who as to eventually become a commentator for the Australian Broadcasting Commission (A.B.C.). Born in 1898, he was the youngest of seven children, and later he learned the art of the game of Cricket from George, a brother twenty years older. He was educated in Sydney at Fort Street High School, and he played Cricket as a representative of Combined High Schools. He joined the Mosman Cricket Club for the 1914-1915 Season, and then with World War I being formally declared in late 1914, he put the sport to one side and then he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) to fight, and holding the rank of Trooper, he was then assigned to the 7th Light Horse Regiment in Palestine. He survived the war, and on his eventual return to Australia, he resumed his Cricket career, and he played against England as a member of the New Souch Wales Colts in the 1924-1925 Season, but the match was rained off. In the 1928-1929 Season, he again played against England as a member of the New South Wales team and an Australian XI, and he again played for New South Wales against England in 1932-1933, and then he finally retired. Right up until his death in 1982, he continued his link with his old club at Mosman.
