Enlisted in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditonary Force on 11 August 1914 and embarked for overseas service on 19 August 1914.  He returned to Sydney in February and was discharged on 4 March 1915.

He enlisted in the AIF and, after officer training, received his commission as a Second Lieutenant on 28 September 1915 and left Australia on 5 October 1915. 

He joined the 1st Battalion in Egypt before its departure for France in March 1917.  He was gassed on 20 July 1916 and was hospitalised in France and England.  He returned to his battalion on 18 October 1917.

Between December 1916 and May 1917, he was in hospital being treated for a number of illnesses.  Soon after his return to the front he was sent to England and transferred to the newly formed 62nd Battalion where he remained until its disbandment in the following September. 

He rejoined the 1st Battalion in January 1918 for the remainder of the war.  He was wounded again on 18 September 1918 during an attack near Hagicourt, Aisne, but remained on duty. 

He returned to Australia in June 1919.  Alfred Graham is his uncle. [JSB]
