Enlisted in the AIF in December 1915.  He was taken on the staff of the 5th Training Battalion in England where he was promoted to Corporal.  He joined the 20th Battalion in France on 26 April 1917.  He was wounded (gunshot wound to left shoulder) six days later on 2 May 1917 when the battalion was near Nereuil, France.  He returned to his unit on 8 June 1917 after treatment in France.  In early August 1917 he was evacuated for treatment of acute laryngitis.  Ultimately he was transferred in December 1917 to hospital in England from where he was sent back to Australia "for change (neurasthenia)" in March 1918.  He was discharged from the AIF on 16 November 1918.  [JSB]
