A student who enlisted with his parents' consent in the AIF on 6 August 1917, aged 16 years and eight months; 16 months below the minimum enlistment age of 18. He embarked for England on 16 November and arrived on 30 January 1918.

He joined the 15th Field Company Engineers, the former unit of his stepbrother William Granville Pritchard, on 21 August 1918 when it was supporting the 15th Brigade, AIF following the start of the Hundred Day Offensive pushing east from Villers-Bretonneux, France.

He embarked for Australia on 5 July 1919 and arrived on 20 August then was discharged from the AIF on 13 September 1919.

His stepmother, Mary Ann (nee Richards) was the mother of Norman John Oldfield Pritchard and William Granville Pritchard. [JSB]
