An auctioneer's assistant who enlisted in the AIF on 20 December 1915. He embarked with the 7th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) for England on 11 May 1916 and arrived on 10 July.

Following further training in England, the 7th FAB arrived in Le Havre, France on 30 December 1916 then moved to northern France. He went into action for the first time on 20 January 1917.

He commenced officer cadet training at St Johns Wood, England in June 1917 and was appointed a Second Lieutenant on 30 November. He rejoined the 7th FAB on 18 December when it was located near Le Bizet, Belgium not far from Armentieres. He was wounded in action on 6 August 1918 but remained on duty.

He embarked for Australia on 11 May 1919 and arrived on 1 July then his appointment was terminated on 15 August 1919. [JSB]
