A clerk who enlisted in the AIF on 2 August 1915, overstating his age by two years. He embarked for Egypt on 6 September.

He joined the 13th Battalion on 8 January but transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade on 13 March 1916. His unit land at Marseilles, France on 13 June and immediately moved to northern France. He was evacuated to England in December 1917 due to influenza and remained there until he returned to France in May 1918.

He married Davina Hills at Edinburgh, Scotland on 21 March 1919 but there is no record of her coming to Australia.

He embarked for Australia on 5 April and arrived on 20 May then was discharged from the AIF on 12 July 1919. [JSB]
