A commercial traveller who initially enlisted in the AIF in May 1916 but was discharged soon after as medically unfit due to his "poor physique". He successfully enlisted the second time in October 1916.

He embarked for England on 11 November 1916 and arrived on 30 January 1917. After training in England, he joined the 4th Battalion in France on 24 October 1917. He was wounded (gassed) in action on 7 March 1918 when the 4th was in a rest area near Dickebusch (Dikkebus) south of Ypres, Belgium.

He was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence. By late August 1918, he was fit enough to start training to return to the front but had not completed that before the end of the war.

He departed for Australia on 25 March 1919 and arrived on 9 May 1919. [JSB]
