A station hand who enlisted in the AIF in September 1915. He embarked for Egypt in December 1915 as a reinforcement for the 1st Battalion but was transferred to the 54th Battalion.

He was wounded (neck) in action on 17 July 1916 when his unit was in the front line near Fleurbaix, France. After initial treatment in France, he was evacuated to England for further treatment and convalescence. He returned to his unit on 2 November 1916.

He was wounded (left thigh) in action for a second time on 8 June 1917 when the 54th came under sustained bombardment and a subsequent attack on their trenches near Bullecourt. He was among the more than 200 men from his unit who were wounded that day. He was again evacuated to England.

While in England recovering from the first time he was wounded in action, he was absent without leave (AWL) in September 1916 for 11 days. As punishment he was sentenced to 10 days Field Punishment and fined. The second time, he was recovering he had two separate periods of extended AWL.

The first from 30 July to 17 September 1917 for which he was sentenced to 100 days detention and fined 159 days' pay. While under escort while serving this sentence, he again went AWL from 5 October to 3 November 1917. For this offence, he was sentenced in January 1918 to 10 months detention and was fined his pay during his absence and detention. During this time he was admitted to hospital for six weeks for further treatment of his wounded leg.

With remissions, he completed his detention at the end of July 1918 and immediately was admitted to hospital where he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He was found to be medically unfit and embarked for Australia on 31 October 1918. He died from tuberculosis at the Woodford Red Cross Home on 14 August 1919 still a member of the AIF. [JSB]
