He was serving with the Royal Australian Engineers at Georges Heights at the time of his appointment to the AIF in October 1915. After being in Egypt for seven months he went to France. He broke down from the stress of service at Pozieres on 17 August 1916 and was evacuated to England suffering from neurasthenia. He was appointed Adjutant, Engineering Training Depot at Christchurch, England in September 1916. He embarked for Australia in February 1917 and his appointment was terminated in April 1917. [JSB]
